Free fishing days by state

Most states pick a day or a weekend each year when anyone can fish without a license. It's the cheapest way to find out if your kid likes fishing before you buy anything.

Before you go: the free day covers the license, not the rules. Size and catch limits, closures and any park entry fee still apply, and some states open the day to residents only. Each row links the state's own page: open it the week before, because dates can move. Many states also let kids under 16 fish free every day of the year; the state page says.

Still ahead in 2026

  • New York: Nov 11, Free Fishing Day (Veterans Day)
  • Oregon: Nov 27–28, Free Fishing Days (Thanksgiving weekend)
  • Florida: Nov 28, License-free saltwater fishing day
  • North Dakota: Dec 26–27, Ice Fishing Free Fishing Days
