# Home movie date: tickets, a snack bar and their pick

> One kid gets the best seat. You check two movies ahead; they pick, tear the tickets and run the concession stand.

## What you need

- Two movies you've checked for rating and content (have)
- Snacks for the bar: popcorn kernels, fruit, a small treat ($5)
- Paper, markers and tape for tickets and a sign (have)
- Bowls, cups and one big blanket (have)

## Before you start

- **Check the movie first.** AAP says ratings are only a guide; read the content notes, and use caution with unrated streaming titles.
- **Popcorn is a choking risk** for younger kids. AAP says keep it and other high-risk foods until 4 or older, by maturity, and eat sitting down.
- **Dad runs the popper or stove,** handle turned in, and pours the hot popcorn himself.

## Steps

1. **Check two, hand over the invite** (Dad) Pick two movies you're fine with. Look at the rating and the reasons listed with it, and know what's in any unrated streaming title. Then hand over the invite: "You pick from these two."
2. **Make tickets and a sign** (Kid) They write two tickets (movie, time, seat) and a sign for the snack bar with prices in pretend money. You set up chairs or the couch.
3. **Open the snack bar** (Together) Dad pops the popcorn. They fill the bowls and run the counter: you "buy" your snack, they tear your ticket and show you to your seat.
4. **Watch together** (Together) Phone in another room. Sit close, watch quietly and notice what they react to. If something bugs you, save it for after unless it can't wait.
5. **Talk and keep the ticket** (Together) When it ends, ask two questions from the list below. Their ticket stub goes in a date book with the date and their rating out of five stars.

## If it stalls

- If they can't choose, flip a coin. Both movies were already fine.
- If they get scared, pause and ask what's scary. It's fine to stop and save the rest for daylight.
- If they want screens all day after, say, "Movie date is a special thing," and pick the next date together.

## Variations

- **Ages 4–6:** A short movie or two episodes. Snack bar of fruit and crackers if popcorn isn't right for them yet.
- **Ages 7–10:** They write a short review after and you compare stars. Next date, they pick two and you choose.

- **Ratings are a guide.** The AAP says ratings are only a guide and movies with the same rating can differ widely, advises reading the content information listed with a rating, notes streaming services don't have to use ratings, and recommends watching together. <https://www.healthychildren.org/English/family-life/Media/Pages/TV-Ratings-A-Guide-for-Parents.aspx> (checked 2026-10-15)
- **Watching together.** The AAP describes co-viewing, including movie nights, as a way to build bonds, and suggests open-ended questions, quiet observation, and holding comments on something that bothers you until later unless it can't wait. <https://www.healthychildren.org/English/family-life/Media/Pages/why-co-viewing-is-important-tips-to-share-screen-time-with-your-kids.aspx> (checked 2026-10-15)
