# Roast the pumpkin seeds

> Don't throw out the guts. Kids pick the seeds clean, pick the flavor, and you work the oven. Forty-five minutes to a snack they made.

## What you need

- Seeds from one pumpkin (have)
- Colander and a bowl of water (have)
- Baking sheet and a towel (have)
- Oil or melted butter, and salt (have)
- A seasoning: cinnamon sugar, garlic powder or chili powder (have)
- Oven mitts (have)

## Before you start

- **Not for toddlers.** AAP lists seeds, especially sunflower seeds, among choking-risk foods and says to keep high-risk foods from children until 4 or older, depending on the child's development. Little ones under 4, and any 4-year-old you're not sure about, get a different snack.
- **Dad's oven.** You put the sheet in and take it out with mitts. AAP says not to leave cooking food unattended, so stay in the kitchen while the oven is on.
- **Hot sheet, hot seeds.** Set the sheet on the stovetop and let the seeds cool 5 minutes before anyone tastes.
- **Burns:** AAP says soak a burn in cool water as quickly as possible, and never put ice or butter on it.

## Steps

1. **Heat the oven and rinse** (Dad) Heat the oven to 325°F. Dump the seeds and strings in a bowl of water. The seeds float and the strings sink, which kids find very satisfying.
2. **Pick them clean** (Kid) Kids scoop out the floating seeds into the colander and pull off any stringy bits. Rinse once more. It doesn't have to be perfect.
3. **Dry them well** (Together) Spread the seeds on a towel and pat dry. Dry seeds get crunchy; wet ones steam.
4. **Pick the flavor and season** (Kid) Kids choose: salty, cinnamon sugar, garlic or chili powder. Toss the seeds in a bowl with a spoonful of oil and a big pinch of the seasoning, then spread them in one layer on the baking sheet.
5. **Roast and stir** (Dad) Roast about 20 to 30 minutes, stirring every 10, until they're golden and you hear them crackle. Small seeds go faster. Kids keep the timer and call the stirs.
6. **Cool and taste-test** (Together) Cool 5 minutes on the stovetop. Everyone tastes and rates the flavor. Store the rest in a jar once they're fully cool.

## If it stalls

- If the seeds are chewy, they needed more drying or more time. Put them back for 5 minutes.
- If kids won't eat the shells, that's fine. They had the fun part; you get the snack.

## Variations

- **Ages 4–6:** They do the float test, the picking and the shaking of the seasoning. You do everything near the oven.
- **Ages 7–10:** Two flavors, half a sheet each, split down the middle with a line of foil, and a blind taste test for the family.
- **Ages 11–14:** They run it start to finish except the oven: you still put the sheet in and take it out. Try a new seasoning from the spice drawer.
