Book your checkup and fix your sleep

You keep the car's oil changed. This is the same thing for you. In thirty minutes you'll have a checkup on the calendar, a short list of questions, and a bedtime that adds up to enough sleep.

What you need

  • Your phone and your calendar
  • Your insurance card, if you have one
  • A list of your medicines and supplements
  • A phone charger that lives outside the bedroom

Read this first

  • New or worrying symptoms don't wait for the checkup. Call your doctor now, and call 911 for an emergency.
  • Low mood counts. Weeks of feeling down, numb, short-tempered or sleeping badly belong on your question list. In men, anger and irritability can be signs of depression.
  • If you have thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 now. It's free, confidential and open 24/7.
  • Too tired to drive safely? Don't. Pull over somewhere safe, or get a ride.

Steps

  1. Book the physical. Call or use the portal to book an annual physical, and put it in your calendar with a reminder.
  2. Write your top three questions. Write your two or three most important questions in a phone note to ask first.
  3. Gather the basics. List your medicines, supplements and family health history in the same note.
  4. Do the sleep math. Count back at least 7 hours from your wake-up time to set a lights-out time; same wake-up daily.
  5. Set a wind-down alarm. Set an alarm 30 minutes before lights-out: screens off, phone charging outside the bedroom.
  6. Tell your people. Tell the people at home your new bedtime and check how it's going after a week.

If it stalls

  • If you don't have a doctor, ask your insurance for in-network primary care, or ask your local health department where to get a low-cost checkup.
  • If you've put it off for years, don't make it a big deal. Say, “It's been a while since my last physical,” and they'll take it from there.
