The first-phone talk and agreement
A first phone is a big handoff, and the rules go better when you write them together before it's in their hand. In 45 minutes you set it up, agree on how it starts, and both sign one page.
- Time
- 45 min
- Cost
- $0
- Ages
- 11 to 16
- Where
- Kitchen table
What you need
- The phone, with family controls ready to set up together
- A sheet of paper and two pens for the agreement
- A charging spot outside the bedroom, like the kitchen counter
Before you hand it over
- Set controls up together. Family controls for downloads, contacts, content, purchases and a bedtime downtime. Do it side by side, so nothing feels secret.
- The tell-me rule. If anyone pressures them for photos, threatens them, or scares them, they tell you and aren't in trouble for it. If they're in danger, call 911.
- Phones sleep outside bedrooms. Charge it in the kitchen overnight. The AAP suggests bedrooms as a first screen-free place, especially the hour before bed.
- Location on purpose. Decide together who can see their location, and turn sharing off for everyone else.
Steps
- Get ready on your own. Pick your two or three must-haves and learn the phone's family controls before you sit down.
- Start with their why. Ask what they want the phone for and listen to a normal day with it.
- Start small, grow from there. Start with calls, texts, maps and camera. Agree on what earns more features.
- Write the agreement together. Write one page together: when it's off, how apps get approved, what you'll check, and your own commitments.
- Say the one rule that never changes. Say: "If anything online scares you or anyone asks for pictures, tell me. You won't lose the phone for telling."
- Sign it and set a check-in. Both sign it, set up the controls together, and schedule a 30-day check-in.
If it stalls
- If they say "Everyone else has a smartphone," don't argue it. Say, "Maybe. This is about you, and it's a starting point, not forever."
- If they push back on a rule, ask them to write the version they'd accept. Meet in the middle where you can.
