Freeze dance with Dad's playlist
Music plus one rule gets small kids moving on a day they can't go out. In 20 minutes you build a playlist, play a few rounds and end with a slow song to calm everyone down.
- Time
- 20 min
- Cost
- $0
- Ages
- 2 to 8
- Where
- Living room or kitchen
What you need
- A phone or speaker with music
- A playlist of 8 to 10 upbeat songs plus one slow one
- Bare feet or grippy socks
Before you start
- Clear the dance floor. Pick up toys, push back sharp-cornered tables, and keep away from stairs and glass doors.
- Bare feet or grippy socks on wood or tile. Slick socks on a smooth floor make for falls.
- Keep the volume reasonable, about the level you'd talk over without shouting.
Steps
- Build the playlist together. Each person picks a few songs. Add one slow song for the end. Check lyrics on anything you're unsure of.
- Clear the floor. Pick up toys, push back tables, and go barefoot or in grippy socks.
- Say the rule once. Dance while the music plays. Freeze when it stops. A wiggle means five jumps, then back in.
- Play and dance too. Stop the music at random times. Dance and freeze with them. About ten minutes.
- Add a freeze challenge. Call a freeze shape each round, like a tree or one foot. Then let them run the music.
- End with the slow song. Finish with the slow song in slow motion, then melt to the floor for five slow breaths.
If it stalls
- If they hate being caught wiggling, drop the jumps. Freezing funny is the whole point.
- If they won't dance, ask them to be the DJ. Running the music is still playing.
