Make-your-own pizza night
Every kid gets their own pizza, their own toppings and their own name for it. An hour on a Friday night, and dinner is the activity.
- Time
- 60 min
- Cost
- About $15
- Ages
- 3 to 12
- Where
- Kitchen
What you need
- Store-bought pizza dough, or flatbreads, English muffins or tortillas
- A jar of pizza sauce and a bag of shredded mozzarella
- Toppings in small bowls: pepperoni, peppers, olives, ham, pineapple
- Sheet pans and parchment paper
- Oven mitts and a pizza cutter
Before you start
- Raw dough is for baking, not tasting or playing. FDA says don't eat raw dough, and don't let kids use it as play clay.
- Wash hands before building and after touching raw dough: at least 20 seconds with soap and water (CDC).
- The oven is Dad's. Mitts on, kids stand back when the door opens. For a small burn, AAP says cool water right away, no ice or butter.
- Small kids, small pieces. For kids under 4, AAP says cut food to half an inch or smaller; it lists sausages and chunks of cheese among high-risk foods.
Steps
- Set up the toppings bar. Heat the oven, wash hands, and fill small bowls with toppings.
- Stretch the dough. Press each dough ball out from the middle with floured fingertips.
- Sauce, cheese, then toppings. Spread two spoonfuls of sauce, add cheese, then toppings.
- Dad bakes, kids clean. Bake per the package while the kids wash hands and wipe the counter.
- Cool, cut and rate. Cool five minutes, cut, then name and rate every pizza.
If it stalls
- If the dough keeps springing back, cover it and let it rest 10 minutes, then stretch again.
- If a picky eater wants only cheese, that's a full pizza. Offer one new topping on one corner, optional.
