The school-morning launch pad

Most school-morning chaos starts the night before: the missing shoe, the unsigned form, the lunch still in the fridge. Spend half an hour setting up one launch pad by the door and a short night-before check, and the morning only has three jobs left.

By the front door

What you need

  • A low hook or a basket for each backpack
  • A bin or mat for shoes
  • Paper and markers for the checklist
  • A clear sheet protector and a dry-erase marker
  • Tape

Before you start

  • Keep the backpack light. AAP says a backpack should never weigh more than 10% to 20% of your child's body weight. Empty it out together once a week.
  • Both straps, every time. AAP also says to pack the heaviest things closest to the center of the back and to wear both shoulder straps.
  • Hang hooks at kid height and screw them into a stud or use a rated anchor, so a loaded backpack can't pull one off the wall.

Steps

  1. Pick the launch pad. Pick one spot by the door with a hook per backpack, a shoe bin and a place for lunch.
  2. Write the night-before five. Write five night-before jobs: homework packed, forms signed, clothes out, lunch ready, shoes in the bin.
  3. Draw it for younger kids. Younger kids draw a picture for each job; tape it at eye level in a sheet protector.
  4. Run the check at the same time every night. Every night at the same time, they work the checklist and you check the backpack for papers.
  5. Set a bedtime from the wake-up time. Count back from wake-up time using AASM's sleep hours for their age, and keep that bedtime every night.
  6. Give the morning three jobs. Mornings are three jobs: get dressed, eat breakfast, take everything from the pad.
  7. Clean out the backpack on Sunday. Once a week, empty the backpack together, sort the papers and hang it back on its hook.

If it stalls

  • If the lunch keeps getting left in the fridge, put your car keys or work badge next to it at night. Nobody leaves without both.
  • If the pad turns into a pile of everything, add one rule: only things going to school tomorrow live there.
