Sticker storybook: they stick, you write
A sheet of stickers and a cheap notebook turn into a book your kid wrote. They pick and place the pictures, you both make up what happens, and you write it down. At bedtime it's the book they ask for.
- Time
- 30 min
- Cost
- About $5
- Ages
- 3 to 7
- Where
- Kitchen table
What you need
- A small notebook or a few sheets of paper folded and stapled
- A sheet or two of stickers: animals, vehicles, faces, anything
- A pen or marker for you
- Crayons for them to add to the pictures
Before you start
- Stickers are small things a baby or toddler can mouth. With an under-3 nearby, work up on the table and gather every backing scrap and loose sticker when you finish.
- Their story, their call. If the dragon eats the school bus, write it down. Steer only if a story turns scary right before bed.
Steps
- Make the blank book. Number six to eight pages and leave the cover blank for the title.
- Pick the main character. Kid picks a hero sticker for page 1. Ask its name and home, and write the answer.
- One sticker, one page. Kid adds a sticker per page. Ask "What happens now?" and write their words in full sentences.
- Read each page back as you go. After each page, point under the words and read them aloud.
- Find the ending and the title. Ask how it ends and what the book is called. Write the title and "by" their name on the cover.
- Read it at bedtime. Read the finished book at bedtime. Pause before the end and ask what happens.
If it stalls
- If they only want to stick stickers, let them fill the pages first. Then go back and tell the story page by page.
- If the story wanders off, that's fine. Write it as told. A wandering story is still their story.
