State park free days and passes

Some states never charge to get into a state park. Others charge at the gate but sell a cheap annual pass, or open every park free on a few days a year. Find your state before you plan a park day.

Before you go: prices and passes change, often in January. Each row links the state park agency's own page, so check it the week before. Camping, cabins, boat launches and tours usually cost extra even where entry is free. Looking for national parks instead? Every Junior Ranger park is listed by state, and federal campgrounds too.

Free days still ahead in 2026

  • Texas: Nov 1, Texas State Parks Day: free entry at all state parks (reserve a Save the Day pass to guarantee entry)
  • Washington: Nov 11, Veterans Day
  • Minnesota: Nov 27, Free Park Day (Friday after Thanksgiving)

No entrance fee at state parks: Arkansas · Illinois · Kentucky · Missouri · Ohio · Pennsylvania · Tennessee. (Parking, camping and some sites can still cost money.)
